How do I get rid of a window that opens on my desktop on boot up, from
Microsoft Networking asking for a "user name" and "password". I have a cable connection to the internet.
I don't want to use a password to access my computer, but I don't
know how to get rid of this annoying window.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi SoliseB,
If you are not networking your computer then click on MyComputer/Control Panel/Network and make sure the Primary Network Logon box is set as Windows Logon.
Re-start and it should be gone.
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thank you to Yoda74 and Geebee76 for replying to my enquiry. There is no little box "saying don't show me this again" (it would be too easy).
And yes, I guess I am now part of a network since I am connecting via cable, so I cannot use "the windows logon". The cable company does not seem to know how to make this disappear and don't much care either.
I guess I can get use to this stupid window appearing every time I boot up, but I cannot understand why Microsoft would assume that everyone shares a computer and would need a password. Ah well, I'll get use to the annoyance. Thanks again for trying to help.

Make sure a user name is in the name field, then click in the password field but DON'T type anything. Click OK and see if it goes away. Since it appears you're actually on a network, it might not be possible to get rid of it, but try that and see...

I had the same problem and here's how I took care of it. (First of all you have to have TWEAK UI installed on your system) If you don't have it, you have to install it. Mine was on my Win98 CD in the folder TOOLS\RESKIT\POWERTOY. In that folder is a file called TWEAKUI.INI. If you double click on that file, it will install it and put an icon in CONTROL PANEL. Double click on the icon, and then click on the tab that says LOGON, then put a check mark in the box that says, "Log on automatically at startup" and put in your user name and pass word. Next time you start Windows, you will still get the little window that tells you to put in your password and user name, but just ignore it and it will go away. That should take care of the problem for you. If the TWEAK UI is not on your CD, go to a search engine and type in TWEAK UI. You should find some thing that will tell you where to get it. I hope this helps you. I know it did for me--I have Windows98. I suppose--but can't be sure that it will work with one of the other Windows operating systems.

I found a place to get Tweak UI. The URL is below. If clicking on the URL doesn't get you there, just do a COPY\PASTE. I hope I'm explaining this right for you. Sometimes I know what to do, but I'm not sure if I explain it clearly.

Thank you Frank for your help. It worked. The window still appears but it goes away on its own without my having to cancel it. I had to download "Tweak UI" by going to: (http://www.microsoft.com/NTWorkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking?NTTweakUI.asp). It's a long address and even though the URL takes you to a Windows NT page, this version works for all operating systems. I got the address from a PC Computing Learning Series magazine (good reference magazines, but you told me what to look for. I had no idea what Tweak UI meant until you explained it in your message.
I've learned something new this week. Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

I have dealed with your problem before, but in my case
it apperar after a frustrated attempt of building a LAN.
The thing i did was:
- From My PC/Control Panel/Network remove the Microsoft Network
Client (it might appear with a different name in your version of WIN,
i just typed the translation i have done from the spanish version that
i got) from the list that shows the protocols, network adapters and clients.
The messagge at start up did not appear again, but in my case my network
configuration was incomplete.
This could work for you if there is another Network Client installed besides the one i recommend you to remove. Anyway, you can allways re-install the Microsoft Network Client if you need to.

Thanks Jeronimo for replying to my enquiry. It seemed to be solved even though the window still appears on my desktop, at least I don't have to wait around to press "cancel". I'll stay with this solution.
As for your english; it's just fine - certainly much better than my spanish. Thanks to all those who already answered. S.
