I just installed AOL 9.0 Optimized and now I have no connection to the internet unless I remove the linksys router from between the cable modem and the pc. AOL has made my router useless now!

Any help on how I can get my router functioning again would be appeciated. I'm using windows98.

Jeffhhh,

I believe this ties to another thread on AOL 9.0.

Does your router connect with dhcp, which means that the ip address is picked up automatically.
It sounds that your router is not getting any ip address to connect to. I say this because your getting on without it.I'm not sure with win 98 but with xp you can get an ip this way.
Dos command line
type, ipconfig /release then hit enter there is a space between config and /
type ipconfig /renew then enter, again space between config and slash
Pull the plug on both the modem and router, wait 30 seconds and plug back in you should be able to get back on with your router.
This is of course if your router and isp are using dhcp.
Hope this helps
Mark
I lost my connection last nite and it worked for me, but that was XP
Remember to pull the plug on both the router and the modem.
Just to be sure check with your isp as how the connection is made, you are getting on without the router.
Does the router come with any setup program?

You mentioned in the other thread that you are using the vermin farm: Kazaa. It is quite possible that the problem you are having has more to do with that than with AOL... You might want to run a full set of security scans to make sure that you don't have a trojan/hijacker, spyware and/or virus that it causing the problem....

Hi Bud,
You might be right about Kazza but his problem is not aol. the reason I say this is that when you bring your own acess aol really runs on whatever kind of broadband setup you have, kind of like on top of it. All you do is put in that you connect tc/ip and aol just follows what you have. I have probably am not clear in explaining this but I really don't think aol has anything to do with it. Especially if he can connect without his router.
Mark:)

Thanks for all the help. I solved the problem by updating the lastest firmware for the router, then unpugging the modem and router for 30 seconds, then pugging up the router after the modem fully booted up. Everything is working fine now.

Maybe I could have gotten away with just unpugging the modem and router for 30 seconds...never tried that.

As far as Kazaa goes, I'm using the Kazaa Lite version which is supposed to contain no spyware, but it has given me many BSOD's and other problems.

You might want to check out some of the comments about KazaaLite on the forum here... Even though it doesn't come with the junk that the full Kazaa has, it opens the door for just about anything around... We have had a number of people post here who have asserted that they don't have viruses, spyware or trojans because they were using KazaaLite and then found that they were riddled with garbage....
