I am trying to build a system using an Asus P5 A with an AMD k-2/500
I have no problem with it running POST. It boots with no "error beeps"
but the system is unable to read any of my devices, like Cd rom and harddrive. both have been purchased new. Not sure if it is a mother board or storage device problem. I have checked and rechecked all connections.

If they not being recognized in BIOS, then clear CMOS either with a MB jumper or by removing the battery for at least 30 minutes.
If no luck, then make sure the drives are properly jumpered as Master or Slave, and the IDE connections are correct(the red or blue or gray stripe along the one edge of the IDE cables is next to pin 1 at the MB connection, and next to the power cable on the back of the drives.), and BIOS is configured to auto-detect the drives.
If that's ok, then try different IDE cables, and connect the drives to different power cables.
Also, if the HD came from another system with that system's parameters on it, then it has to be formatted before BIOS will recognize it.

If they are not being recognized by Windows, then make sure that the MB's drivers have been installed.
