Well, I've finally done it. Tired of the problems with IE, I downloaded an alternate browser: Mozilla Firebird. I like it so far, still trying to get used to it. No major bugs encountered yet.

One question I have to anyone else who might use it... does it have a feature that allows you to "save" all your open tabs and then reopen the browser later on and have it reload all the open files? This was the only thing I used to like about Opera when I used it a couple of years ago. (I stopped using it because it crashed constantly.)

Not sure but there are about a million and a half other things you can add on to it....some of which are very nice and I wouldn't be caught on the web without them.

Useful looking items MJC.
Where can I find them?
Firebird is really good - the tabs in particular.
Is it my imagination, or do files download quicker with firebird than IE?

I use Netscape 7.1 which has the same basic engine as Mozilla and it definitely loads faster than any browser I have used before including IE and earlier versions of Netscape.... I also really like the tabs...:)

Time to maybe have another look at Opera ixl; a couple years is a long time in browser development... A new Opera version 7.2 was just released.

Firebird does run a close second (in my book), especially if you don't like the idea of paying money for a browser.

Netscape 7.1 is the end of the line for Netscape, as you probably know Budfred.

Isn't it interesting that the announcement about no more Internet Explorer version updates and the demise of the Netscape browser happened only weeks apart? Death toll of the browser wars I guess :)

Yeah, I know it is dying a slow death, but I will keep on using it for a while. I haven't installed Mozilla or Opera yet on my newer computer and I haven't even finished getting set up. Once I do, I will try them out here and probably switch to one of them...

Is this what your looking to do? In bookmarks tab click add to bookmarks then in the popup window click the bookmark all tabs in folder. Then save them were you want.

Opera has a feature that allows you to exit the browser and then reopen it later and pick up where you left off...rserving all the open tabs. A pretty nice feature, really.

As indeed has MyIE2, although it's not a browser in the sense of Opera or Mozilla. :) :)

No, it is a front end for IE, and vulnerable to many of the same exploits that IE is.....

Thanks for the replies, folks.

I'm definitely willing to reconsider Opera, if they have their act together. By this I mean that I do not need to be bombarded by advertising (I get enough from sites themselves) and mainly, I don't want to have to deal with the thing crashing on an hourly basis, as my last version of Opera did when I tried it.

Compatibility is also an issue. I am a lazy person and really don't like having to use two browsers. I am already losing interest in Firebird because there are too many sites where it just won't load the pages properly or features are missing.

To get rid of the "built in" advertising in Opera you have to have a registration code. At least in version 6.3 you do and I surmise that htis has not changed with the upgrade to ver 7

I am using Phoenix, I think that's the same as Firebird before it got renamed.
It's definitely a good and handy browser, but yesterday, for some time, it just wouldn't open up the URLs I gave it. Just no reaction.
Which forced me to open my K-Meleon - which, incidentally, is another member of the same Mozilla family a far as I know - and it did just fine.
Another thing is, in Phoenix, you have the possibility to look at your cookies and selectively delete them by clicking on Tools/Preferences/Privacy/Manage Cookies, which is a very handy feature, but which for some days now, is resulting not in the "Manage Cookies" window opening, but in the browser freezing and not responding anymore, so that I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to close it...
