Compatability isn't so much a problem since the NForce2 and KT400/A chipsets came out, but a mobo is a very personal component. It depends entirely on what you want the system to do.
Are you going for the cheapest mobo you can find? Is this a gaming PC? Are you looking to overclock that T-bred? What's your RAM's speed? What OS will you be using?
If you just want some starter ideas - the MSI K7N2 Delta-L is a nice one and not too expensive, and the Asus A7N8X series are among the top-end.

okay ill have to lay down my cards: i used to use a K7S5A from ECS. Thing is, there's something wrong when I try to run it on 133/133 because ALL the games I play exit and do a fatal error. However, running on 100/100 frequency produces great results, albeit the slower clock speed of 1.2GHz. WHat's wrong? Heat? RAM incompatibility? CMOS Battery? The MB came from a power surge which left all aomponents dead, btu the B survived. Maybe its busted?
RAM speed is DDR 266 (2 sticks of 256), and im using a Volcano 7++ fan, Geforce FX 5200

If the board runs at all after surviving a power surge that fried everything else, I would consider that lucky....

you should have seen my heart skip a beat ...
Turn on computer.
See sparks fly.
See me scream.
See all peripherals dead.
See hard drive scorched.
See burn marks on casing.
Go to computer shop.
Warranty is beautiful.
Everything replaced.
Motherboard miraculously lives.
See me buy a UPS :)

Your mobo should handle up to a 2600+ T-bred with the latest BIOS. I would try flashing the BIOS first. If that doesn't work, try an intermediate FSB like 125MHz. If that works, that means your RAM isn't up to snuff.
If it still doesn't work, I think your mobo did get damaged.
