Do you know www.fourmilab.ch ?
It's one of those websites which give the internet any value it has.
On one of its pages, http://fourmilab.ch/speakfree/windows/ , the Speak Freely program is presented to the visitor.
I'll not discuss that any more than mentioning that it enables the pc user to transmit encrypted voice messages to another pc user over a local network or the internet.
On his "End of Life Announcement" page for Speak Freely, http://fourmilab.ch/speakfree/eol/ - the author plans to discontinue development of this software - he voices the following thoughts :

The Internet, regardless of its state of development, is in the process of metamorphosing into something very different from the Internet we've known over the lifetime of Speak Freely. The Internet of the near future will be something never contemplated when Speak Freely was designed, inherently hostile to such peer-to-peer applications.

What he is writing here has struck me as very to-the-point.
Are there many people, I wonder, who have enough of a bird's eye view of the internet phenomenon ?
And another question I am asking myself : do we - the pc and internet user - really think enough about what the internet is, was, and is becoming ? Do we devote enough thought to this ?
