I'm just getting into tweaking my OS performance and something just doesn't make sense.

Control Panel->Administrative Functions->Services

I can choose which services I want disabled, started by myself, or started by windows. Now it's my understanding that I can have several hardware profiles and on startup I can select between them. However, under the General Tab for each service, there's no reference to say under Profile A I want this service to be manual, but under Profile B I want it to be disabled. That's only under the Log On tab, but it's only 'enable' and 'disable', not 'auto' 'manual' and 'disable'.

Does that mean for each profile, I can select whether a service is enabled or disabled under the Log On tab, and then if it's enabled, then it will startup however I have chosen under the General Tab?

Also, what's all that junk with the radio buttons on the Log On tab to choose between 'Local System Account' and 'This Account'? What's 'Allow Service to Interact with Desktop'?

Again and again, thanks for the help.

That's actually where I got the 'inspiration' :D .. I read the articles on setting up multiple profiles and adjusting the services and then when I went to actually try it out on my computer it didn't add up. :confused: But thanks for the tip. I've been reading quite a bit on his site and found a lot of useful info.

I actually borrowed a Win XP Pro textbook from a teacher friend of mine so we'll see if MS can help me.

If I am understanding you correctly
(Not sure about this but here goes).

When each user has Administrive privleges you can set each one exactly as you want. Enable and disable the services on user basis

For example
User a = Disable ALERTER.

User b = enable ALERTER

This would mean that when you boot into "a" it would be disabled but in "b" it would be enabled

To check it, what to do is in your main user disable the first item in the list. Then log into second user and see if the item is different. Just do one at a time until you know what you are doing.
