Floppy drives (http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/floppydiskdrives/products.htm?catid=210)

I suggest buying an internal drive not a USB. BIOS may not detect a USB floppy and you may not be able to boot from it if you need to.

Don,t buy a Sony! I did and have had nothing but trouble with it since the initial install. Other Sony components are fine but their floppies s**k.

The floppy is one of the easiest install around. Opening your case depends on the case, but it is usually a few screws on the back and sliding off the side. Once open, you disconnect the floppy drive power and cable, noting how they are arranged so you can do the same with the new one, putting in the cable backwards is probably the most common mistake. Unscrew the screws holding it in place on the sides, you may have to get at the other side of the case for this. Some will then just slide out the front and some will require you to remove the front of the case. This can be surprisingly tricky, but it can be done. Slide the new one in, screw it is place and connect the power and cable. Use the new cable that came with the drive since cables can get old and fail.

While you have the case open, use a can of air to blow out the dust. If it hasn't been open since you bought it, it is probably pretty dusty in there and that will shorten the life of numerous components. It is probably a good idea to blow it out at least once a year and more if it is in a dusty environment.

Be aware that when you successfully install the floppy drive that your geekiness index goes up several degrees.....:D

Along with the aforementioned info...here's a link with a pretty picture...;)

Also, always terminate (i.e., use the end connectors on the cable if only installing one floppy).

Budfred, Whyzman. Your invaluable assistance is appreciated. Whyzman, the link on how to change a floppie is very informative. I have had this machine for three years and have never but never ventured into the sanctum sanctorum of it, but here I go, and as it is said in my Country (Not here) "Boots and all". Will keep you informed. Incidentley whilst checking out the Systems Manager one thing did occur. a message said. Qoute: One of the drivers is not operating correctley. Go to the driver. Code =28(Ox IC) and click on it, but I cannot locate it. Budfred thanx for your humorous encouragement :D ;) I feel like Captain Kirk:o

Did you check in Device Manager to see if any of the devices were indicating a problem? You may need to do this from Safe Mode to see what is really going on. This could be the reason your floppy is not working....

No! Budfred, but I will. I did not find any conflicts indicated

Go to Device Manager.
Remove the floppy controller, click ok.
Reboot your pc.
If it finds the floppy, you're in luck.
If not, try another cable.
Still no go, replace the drive.
If this doesn't work, it may be in the motherboard.

I would suggest following Fruss' suggesting in SAFEMODE...

Also, watch for any duplicate entries while there...if you find any remove all instances and reboot allowing Windoze to find and reinstall...
