Seems to be a useful tip (http://www.windowsxpatoz.com/cgi-bin/search/index.cgi?answer=1037216477&id=1234567890) , Try it at your own risk. I did and created a shortcut to pcguide just below the run item in the right side of the start menu. It looks cool.

Neat! Gonna give it a run tonight. Would it be possible to add several icons this way?

I have not tried, but i have observed that when you right click on the menu item it pops out another selectable item.Hope i am making myself clear:cool:. It will be a good idea to backup your registry before you try anything drastic.

PS:Tell me if you get the icon right, i am unable to get the icon, only the default windows folder icon is displayed.

Have you tried dragging the shortcut (which is what you have in the start menu) to the desktop and then changing the icon and then put it back in place?

Ernie@

I tried but how to 'put it back in place'? The drag and drop works one way only.

You will see (hopefully) from my attachments that I have inserted a trial icon into the start menu in two different places.

First (trial) was just draged upto the position above Programs in the start menu.

Second (trial2) was inserted as follows;

Right click on start button and explore down left hand pane until you see START Menu.

Left click this and it will open up a list of the contents of your start list in the right hand side. Now just drag the icon into here and reposition as required.

Ernie @

By your first method the shortcut appears on the LEFT side on the top corner of the start menu, where i think it will stay permanently unless you manually delete it, unlike the ones below which appears on usage basis i guess.

By your second method the shortcut appears inside the start menu, above the accessories.

Now if you see my attachment the shortcut appears on the RIGHT side of the start menu just below the Run menu, where i feel the drag and drop won't work. :p

You have no attachment posted.

Below you will see the result of dragging and dropping only in XP start menu.

Dragged from the desktop onto start button (which opens automatically), and then hold over the Programs arrow, which again opens up start menu automatically, where the icon was dropped.

It can now be moved to position required.

First time was done in 98 this one in XP

Sorry, i meant the attachment to my original post. If you can see that image, please see where the pcguide shortcut and the mouse cursor appears. It appears just below the Run button on the right side of the start menu, not inside the start menu / all programs.:)

So, I believe that, if you want a shortcut where it appears in my original attachment, you have edit the registry as shown in that tip.Simple drag and drop wont do.:D

The folowing link might help you.

As you said it might be, it is a reg hack for the existing icon you have.

The link shows for "Search" & "Run" but should be easily (or fairly) configurable for your needs. I will keep looking though.

(It is snowing quite heavily outside here in the borders so I am not going to far today and this will give me something to do)
