Hi guys,

Once again I need some help from you professionals.

I run WinXP - Home Ed. on my PC and I have it set up with me as a full admin rights acct. and my son as a separate user on a restricted acct. It appears that whenever I reboot or login I get this low pitched "ping" or "bong" sound. What does this signify? I have spent ages checking things but I cant seem to work it out. I am sure it never used to do it!

Any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

G

Have you checked out

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds

to see if any kind of sounds are configured for certain actions.

Pave_Spectre,

Thanks for such a speedy reply. I have looked under your suggestion and have now identified the sound....windows "default beep". However I still do not know what initiates it? I have no sound schemes set. I am able to play the default beep from this screen in control panel so I know for definite this is the sound, but what causes it on logon?

When viewing the sound scheme, scroll down the list of program events below that and see if there is still a sound allocated to 'Windows Logon' or any other events.

I have set mine to no sounds in the past and discovered that there were still sounds configured. It appears you may have the same problem. If not Im out of ideas.

Pave_spectre,

Thanks for your help. I still cant find the problem. I have tried your suggestions and appreciate your help. Maybe some of the other guys will have some suggestions too.

I dont always seem to get this sound. Could it have something to do with other stuff loading as I seem to get a momentary loss of icons and then the beep. Sometimes two beeps and the other times it doesn't happen??? how wierd is that?

Thanks again man

Could you please download, run and post a HijackThis (http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/) log?

MJC,

Did you manage to look at my "Hijack This" file?
What does this program do, and how do you know what shouldn't be there?

You have to wait until the experts get here to look it over and they can tell you what to remove or not....

You do have quite a few apps starting from boot........but nothing really nasty.

You can go over the O4 entries at this site.....

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm

and decide which items you would rather start manually, I am willing to be it is one of those causing your "beep".
