I have managed to get the tray of my cd-rom out using paper clip. But now some black rubber band thingy also came out. Now my cd-rom cannot read any cd. It just keeps doing this whirring noise whenever I play or press the eject button. Is it time to buy a new cd-rom from the look of this?:(
Btw also I have difficulty diconnecting the analog/digital cable at the back of the cd-rom. Pulling it is no use. Anyone has any ideas? Appreciate it.

Probably the belt between the motor, and the tray eject mechanism. That would explain why the drive would not open.
If you are used to working on mechanisms, removing the casing, and putting it back is possible. If not, then just hold a funeral for it.

Some of these plugs incorporate a clip. Look at the sides of the plug for a projecting piece, and try pressing it into the body of the plug as you pull. NOT on the cable please.
