I have a CYRIX 300mhz system running WIN98 (at least it was http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif. When I start up my PC now, it goes through (what appears to be) a normal boot sequence (lights on my floppy then the CD) but nothing comes up on my monitor screen. I have rechecked all my connections motherboard connections and all seem okay! I have replaced my video card and my CPU fan and Power Supply are working.

When I listen to the boot sequence, it sounds like it is stopping part of the way (I don't hear any beeps). I recently upgraded my memory (from 64 to 196MB) and when I removed the old memory chip, it was very warm!

It was working yesterday and there were no obvious signs that something was wrong (even after putting in the new memory, it worded fine).

I have since put back the old memory chip and still nothing!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

hello Briceb and welcome,
Do you have access to another machine that you can test this RAM on?
someone else will be along shortly with some more ideas.

Hello and thank you for replying to my question! I have checked the RAM on another PC and it works just fine. As I mentioned earlier, it starts to boot and I hear the wheels turning (you know what I mean) and then it doesn't go any further and nothing is displayed on my monitor???? I do not hear any beeps and the floppy light stays on. Do you think I might have a virus? I do not open email attachments I am not familiar with! Please let me know what you experts think.

I would also like to say that this is a dynamite site and what an incredible tool for people to use! Great job!!!!

OK.
The RAM is the first place to start, so if it tests fine then the next thing to test is the CPU. That can be a little trickier to test as some MOBOs are fairly restrictive. If you get Nothing on the screen (no curser, no BIOS info), most likely it is component failure.
If you have another board to test the CPU on or another CPU you can test on your board, then that would be the next step.
You must be sure to thuroughly check MOBO documentation for acceptability for this to work.
Let us know how that goes.
