Hello all-
I am new to the world of wireless networking. Here is my situation:
I am connecting through a dormitory network (I have a CAT-5 jack in my room). I have a Pocket PC with 802.11b wireless capability. I want to utilize that to get online from my dorm room. Is there something I can buy to plug into that wall jack to give me a wireless network? Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums!
Sounds like you want something like a wireless router or wireless access point like THESE (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=335&manufactory=1015&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1).

Ok. That WAP (Wireless Access Point) should work. I have to go through a router that the school already has. Here's my other question:
Our school connects computers based upon their MAC (physical) addresses. Do routers have their own MAC address, or would it simply forward everything to my PC? If they do, I need to talk w/ our Comp. Services guy and make sure he's willing to allow my router to have access. Thanks guys,

Yes it has a MAC address, and yes your IT will be concerned about putting it on their network because of security concerns, especially with wireless involved. I would research the wireless forums here to learn about WEP and other security issues with wireless. It will help your IT understand your level of expertise with wireless...the more you show proper knowledge the better the chance they will approve it.
