Hi Anyone who may have an idea....
Am running AMD Duron 700 Mhz processor on a Gigabyte GA-7ZM motherboard. I have 768 MB pc133Mhz Sdram, A 30GB Deskstar 7200rpm HD, an ATI Rage Fury Pro 32 MB AGP graphics Card and a Cirrus Logic PCi Graphics Card for a second monitor. As far as I know I have the latest Bios Drivers for the motherboard and graphics cards and opther peripherals. I had to recently "upgrade" to Win 98SE whan I put the extra two 256 MB Ram chips in as Win 98 did not recognise it...I had lots of probs with my second monitor crashing...so much so that I had to downgrade just to get the thing working...okly dokly...running the photoshop...[loads of ram] la la la la crash...Ctrl+Alt+Del and nothing...does it only happen when doing specific things with [300MB] images...? No now it is starting to hang whilste doing silly little things that I had no probs with before all the extra ram... IRQ conflicts...maybe? But not according to the resources troubleshooter...a lot is allocated but apparently nothing which is actually disliking each other so much that it is deliberately trying to get at me, by forcing me to save at a ratio of once to every three actions...which is proving to be serious...and now...its happened a couple of times in non photoshop mode...has anyone any clues??????????
Is there an SE Patch called something like "Don't Crash Again you Bastard Fix Patch"???????
Temp folder has been emptied 20.4 GB free.....

well at least you didn't "upgrade" to winME.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

If you used the upgrade CD rather than doing a clean install on a freshly formatted HDD-then that could be it. I never cared for the "upgrades".

Unfortuanately...when I "upgraded" I had the help of an IT friend and we put an extra drive in, wiped the Deskstar Drive and then copied the SE OS across. Would it be worth going for 2000 Pro as an OS? Or is there another solution?

From what I've seen win98 seems to have problems working with more than 512MB RAM. Yes, it can theoretically handle up to 4GB, but in reality after 512MB it starts getting flaky. Try just the two 256MB chips and see if it acts better.

The "upgrade" attempt might also be part of the problem, if you tried installing and uninstalling rather than formatting and installing clean each time. A clean win98SE install on a freshly formatted drive should have no real problems.

Another thing to consider might be a dual head video card instead of trying to mix AGP and PCI. That might also be causing trouble or adding to existing problems. AGP is a faster graphics bus and mixing them could be causing problems with the two trying to synchronize.

EDIT: Just found this article at The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/14967.html) that explains the memory problem. I knew it was out there but didn't have it when I posted my original reply. Thanks to mjc for this one...

good point on the RAM- Pete....

win2k is much more stable than win9x, if you have a copy available I say go for it.

Basically to use more than 512MB in 9x you have to make some configuration changes to it...so that kind of implies it needs to be running first. With 2k it will not flake out if you try to install it with more than 512MB.

Oh, and I think the patch you are reffering to is called a hammer.... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Actually I tried threatening to use an alterative fix called larjknife2port but the bloody thing just froze in fear and I wasn't any better off!
