View Full Version : Strange Colour Problem?

Hi all

I have just built a new PC and everything works just fine except for a minor problem:-

1. In certain apps namely Notepad, Wordpad and Media Player, I keep getting a block of white colour at the top of the grey menu bar. The words: File, Edit, Format, View and Help appear on a white background instead of the usual grey. The rest of the menu bar to the right is grey as it should be it's just the part that immediately surrounds the menu names that's white; the small gap between each word is still grey also. Ok, this isn't serious but it is very strange because I have never seen this before. It is even more puzzling because not all apps are affected - Internet Explorer's menu bar always appears all grey just as it should. I really would like to get to the bottom of this.

Any help greatly appreciated

I'm assuming this is a fresh installation of Windows and not a pre-loaded hard drive moved to this computer from another. What version of Windows is it? Are the symptoms present immediately after OS installation, before adding any drivers, apps, etc?

I want to say I've seen similar symptoms on a Win98 machine, but I don't remember the exact circumstances...

Restart the computer.

If that does not work, then reinstall Windows on top of itself.

If still no luck, then reformat and reinstall Windows.

Yes this is a fresh install of windows. I am running Windows XP Pro version 2002 with Service Pack 1a. Can't quite remember if it happened immediately after installation, but it has only been on for about a week now.

Ski:
How do you install windows on top of itself? Do you mean use the "Repair" option? I don't think Win XP allows 2 installations of Windows in the same partition, it allways warns you about this!

Thanks guys

Since you are using WinXP, a Repair Install is an option and probably preferable. To install over itself is not a second install on the same partition, it is installing over the current install. Since you have WinXP, this is not only unnecessary, but probably less desirable as well....

I assumed that you were using Win 98 or 98SE, since you did not specify your O/S.
