Please help...downloads

Thanks in advance. This started all of a sudden. Whenever I download something, the downloading window comes up and the progress bar moves all the way up and when it gets to the end, as if the download was finished, the whole download window starts flashing and I can't stop it. I have to reboot my computer to stop it. When I get back on I can't find the item I downloaded. S-O-S

300mhz PentII, memory 128mb, Windows SE.

Scan your cpu for viruses and see what you come up with, make sure the virus protection is updated.This is a toughy/
