In M$ Word, it's possible to set headers and footers but is it possible to set a sider.
The reason I'm asking is we want to alter the template for our headed paper so that as well as the header we have a list of contact numbers etc down the side. then when someone starts a new doc using that template they simply type their letter in the body of the page.
If that makes sense ;)

sider = page margin :)
'On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the Margins tab.
Under Margins, select the options you want.
Note To change the default margins, click Default after you select new margin settings. The new default settings are saved in the template on which the document is based. Each new document based on that template automatically uses the new margin settings'.

I realise that, but I want text to appear in that margin. I've had a play around using a table and someone else has suggested a text box.

Just tried it out myself and I think a text box may be your best option.
Modify the left margin to somthing suitable to be able to fit the required detail on the side, then after inserting a text box, it can be moved outside those margins and resized to the required width and height.

You can use a Text Box or a Frame (in older versions) to create a box you can place anywhere on the page; the way text flows around these can be further customised.
Another approach would be to insert a Table into a new page with just one row and two columns. Then drag the edges of the two cells to the size required for the page (so that the left cell is now your left column) and remove or edit any borders the way you want them to be formatted.
Once you have it set the way you want - save as a template.
Tables are very versatile in both word docs and in html.
