State Sen. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, has urged residents to remove their telephone numbers from the search engine Google to protect against identity theft.

Potential problem, get a secured mailbox.
I worry more about my credit report being outsourced or hacked.
I had coworker that had identity stolen by temps working for institution for a home re-finance, Google was not the culprit.

Yes, it's futile to opt out. Unless you've paid for an unlisted phone number for quite a while, or your phone number has changed or you've moved recently, the information is probably out there somewhere. anywho.com, whitepages.com, reversephonedirectory.com, etc., etc. etc.....
When you get a normal phone number in the US you get a public listing....and these days that means ending up in every internet directory! (all with the phone compaines blessing....some of the directories are run by the phone companies)
