hello,
i have a new problem with my pc. I built my own system many months ago and run Win98SE smoothly with zero problems. Very recently I started having problems in the installation of software. In a few words: during the installation the screen goes black and the monitor goes to sleep. The pc stops functioning completely. Alt+Control+Delete does not solve the problem.
It happened to me once and the first time I thought it was just the program I was trying to install (scratches on CD or some bug in the program) but now is happening also with another program that is just a game. I am starting to belive that is something with the pc. My DVD-ROM seem to work ok! DVDs play perferctly. Other games and application that run from the CD work fine but apparently not the installation!
I recently changed my Gainward TNT2 card with a new Matrox 450 DDR dualhead (is now connected to my monitor only and the dualhead option is disabled). The video card could be the problem but I don`t think so because it works fine with all other normal applications............so it`s only when i install stuff that i get the death of the pc. Temperature of the system is ok! Does anyone know what is going on here?
thank you
Andrea

Checked viruses, maybe you contracted one. Could be a hardware problem, ram, powersupply, cpu, harddrive, mobo. Most of the time it would be the powersupply. But you have to use a process of elimination. But im just giving out ideas , dont take action until you review others replies.

Hey,

Maybe you already know this, but like diurnal, I will toss out a couple of ideas.

When you install something, make sure that all power management is turned off, both in Windows and BIOS. Also, do the same for anti-virus, both in windows and BIOS. Also, make sure you don't have any tasks running in the background such as disk management utilities.

Hang in there. Let's do the easy stuff first and as I said, if you already know the above, then we'll dig a little deeper.

Cheers,

regarding power supply unless is about to die I can`t think that is the cause...I mean.....it never gave problems but still i`ll consider it. Regarding power management what exactly do you mean? can u tell me more?
thank you
