A coworker is showing "MessageApp" on her task bar. It won't open with either left, double, or right mouse click. What is this, and how does she deal with it? (OS = WinXP Pro)

See this http://tinyurl.com/v0f8

Use the "Find" facility here http://tinyurl.com/v0fz to seek "MessageApp".

Ad-Aware obviously finds this program.
I wonder if it can be used to disable it [if appropriate]!

GeneralRant

MSConfig is not meant to be a startup control application....yes it will disable startups, but it also adds an autorun entry of its own and will contiue to run everytime you boot...not behavior that is needed from a Startup contol program!!

Many of the programs that run from start up have the option for preventing this from within the programs options (legit programs, anyway). Use these options to disable those unwanted startups. Other programs that may run from start up (not so legit items) should be entirely removed from the system in question. Some of them have entries in Add/Remove Programs, and should be uninstalled that way.....other will need to be forcibly removed.

Using MSconfig to identify what is running at startup can also be misleading....as in an XP system there are over 100 registry locations that can be used to launch programs at boot time....and MSconfig only checks 2 dozen or less!

Could you run
HijackThis (http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/) on the machine in question and post the log here?

Follow the tutorial on that download page....
