It always used to be Add/Remove Programs >> Internet Explorer and it was one of the choices along with uninstall. (Unless IE6 is different?).

I have IE6 on 98SE, you go to Add/Remove Programs and click IE6 uninstall once, it then asks if you want to 1) Install, 2) Repair, 3) Uninstall
You choose repair.

yeh, it used to but earlier when I looked it showed 'internet explorer Q822925.' the option was to uninstall and restore previous configoration.

I went to the update site and after updating it now shows same only Q 824145.

so it looks like the option is no longer available, only to uninstall the last update.

just noticed that it shows a windows one also Q 823559

And after you do repair, you run scan for Windows Updates again.

Try this,

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove.

NOTE: Internet Explorer is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool if you delete the uninstall (or backup) information for the previous version of Internet Explorer.

If Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools is missing from the list of installed programs and you did not delete the uninstall information or install (or reinstall) a Windows 2000 service pack, run Setup.exe from your Internet Explorer\Setup folder.

If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if Internet Explorer 6 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

NOTE: This command is case sensitive.

Q822925 = MS03-032: August 2003 Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer

Q824145 = MS03-048: November 2003 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer

Q823559 = MS03-023: Buffer Overrun in the HTML Converter Could Allow Code Execution

ErnieK posted this thread (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26097) about cumulative patching bug.

Could that be related? Add/Removing the Q82415 and then, possibly, the Q822925 might get you back to before these two IE6 patches and allow IE6 itself to show up in Add/Remove for a "normal" repair.

I've no idea if the patches update the patches or what goes on. I just hate "updating/upgrading" unless it is truly critical (like the RPC vulnerabilities) as it so often causes more problems than the "cure" itself.

Perhaps we (with simple standalone pcs) have become too paranoid about system vulnerabilities. That is MHO and I try to wait until the next SPx and then wait another wee while to see if others report problems using it. ;)

If nothing else works you could try IEradicator and a new install of IE - I guess.

I've removed Q 824145 which got back IE6 & tools, so was able to do the repair.

I half expected Q 822925 to come up & have to be removed as well but it didn't. so the last must have over-ridden the previous.

Q 823559 (the windows one is still there) but I will leave 'as is' at the moment and see how it goes.

I have not had any updates show in add/remove before, is this a new thing ? or a side effect of de-bugging a bug ?

:D

Hi Vic,
The updates have been in add/remove for quite awhile, not all of them but most. Saved my butt last year when 1 of the critical updates really slowed down my machine [lots of people had that problem, there is along thread here somewhere] Anyway MS finally fixed it. I agree this update critical stuff only to have problems is really becoming a pain.

Hi Mark,

maybe I just didn't have the updates, like paul I've been using others as a 'fender' and see what happens to them first. also see whether they apply, or really need to be done.

this time it was because I had the prob & thought that it might fix it, how stupid is that !!!!

sometimes you just see 'critical' and think it's the best thing to do, & go along with it, but it seems that we have to be as careful with updates now, as we are with checking our mail.:(

I had this problem a year ago on a XP machine. Mjc came up with the fact that there might be firewalls getting in the way of each other. What I mean is, have you changed firewalls? If so the first one might not have uninstalled properly. If that is the case post back and I'll tell you what Mjc told me to do. If not.....

Sorry for your continuing problem. What does the error message say when it crashes? I know your running 98se but maybe we can check the error in MS knowledge base and see what they say.

If you have an always on connection [cable-dsl] hit the report button they sometimes comeback with what they think the problem is. From what I have gathered they get no personal info. I myself have done this a couple of times and it even helped solve a problem once.
Try it the next crash [which I hope does not happen}

From what I have gathered they get no personal info.

Well, I guess that depends on what you consider personal info....

Name, address, email address and telephone number (if you filled that info in when installing Windows...theorized to hunt some of it down from other area if not entered then), product key, activation status on XP, installed version of OS, IE, Office (if installed), WMP and some other software (not all MS), various other lists of installed items...oh yeah, they don't get a credit card number, that is about the only thing I know for sure that is blocked...

Hi Mjc,
Are you saying it is not a good idea to send a report in when a crash occurs? I have never filled out any of that stuff on XP and it came pre-activated from the mfg.
I have found it to be helpful in tracking a crash, but if you think it's a form of spyware I probabaly won't do it anymore.
Thanks,
Mark

In that case.....<I have never filled out any of that stuff on XP and it came pre-activated from the mfg.> it is probably OK, because I have no hard evidence it actually seeks out the missing data.......but I do know what it does send if you had the data filed in.

It sends more than most people would feel comfortable with if they actually knew what was sent.....

But then again if you had filled in the registration info and sent it off to MS they would have it already anyway. ;)

if I remember rightly there is a link telling you what info is collected, I seem to remember looking at it a while ago. and saying 'no thanks' I have no objection to them checking that I have a legal copy of the o/s. but that's it.

I have a hunch that, possibly, they neither don't get to know your shoe size...

mjc

If I remember correctly your shoe size is the 45th question on the registration info, right after blood type and years living at current address.....
