It seems like a low end comp without all the functionality of a comp

Lowend ok. First disadvantages of xbox:game selection, functionality inferior to cpu(one thing its not a cpu, its a game system,so why call it a lowend cpu)duh?
Second advantages: true 128bit processer as opposed to cpus ancient32bit processers.(which will take about 10yrs to get even close to 128bit processers),2nd games will work automatically(no oh no i have win2k, i cant play it,oh no i have xp , the game wont work),3rd games will be written 5 times better than cpu games because todays cpus are bottlnecked,4th (oh no my game freezes up, i need new drivers for video card, motherboard, processer, operating system(oh no directx100 is out i must download it)
5th Smokes every game system to date psx2, gamecube, sega, dreamcast
6th Its called a Game System not a Cpu, So that means its in a totally different category than computers and thats all it does is play games, and no i dont want it to run microsoft word
7th What is better a mouse or a contoller(oh yeah i can use a controller with my cpu, yeah right and it takes 3hrs to set up the buttons up correctly)
8th Thanks for your time

CPU...Central Processing Unit. That's the little square IC chip inside the case, not the entire unit itself. It's called a computer not a CPU...
Comparison between xbox and computers? Not valid in my opinion, the xbox is represented as a game console, not a computer. I don't see a keyboard, or mouse, scannner, printer or any mention of it running any version of Windows, DOS, Linux, OS-2, UNIX or any other OS I know of.
Bottleneck? hmmm...it does have a hard drive, which spins at a maximum of 10,000 RPM, while the Intel P-III 700 CPU it uses runs at 700 million cycles per second...that means the CPU spends quite a bit of time sitting there waiting for the hard drive to make another revolution and find needed data, whether it's in a computer or an xbox.
Downloading drivers, Direct-X and so on...think about that. As the hardware and protocols evolve and improve, newer versions of the xbox will use newer versions of hardware and protocols, same as computers. Newer games will implement support for them, and guess what will happen to your spiffy 2001 model xbox??? I'd almost be willing to bet once game fans become accustomed to the performance of it or other game machine manufacturers try to go MS one better, you'll see faster CPUs used and possibly newer and better video cards.
It's a commercial product produced by a profit oriented corporation. Think about that. What would happen if future models were the same as the current one, so consumers had no reason to buy new ones, which would mean MS would not profit from the non-existent purchases? Did GM or Ford became multi-billion dollar corporations by producing the same cars every year? Did MS become the largest software company in the world by doggedly sticking with DOS? For that metter look at the past history of Sony's Playstations. Or Nintendo...I see 10 year old Nintendo and Atari units in every resale shop around going for $5 or so...games for them are $2 or less...the cartridges won't fit in newer units, so the entire thing goes out the door when the newest "killer" game machine is introduced.
You'll be upgrading, MS will see to that...

I'm not anti-console by any measure in fact we have the P2, P1, Dreamcast, N64 and SNES. The measure of any console is the playability of the games. Heck one the favorite multi player games here is Bomberman 1 and 2 for the SNES -the graphics and music are nothing special but it's a fun game. So before I decide to spend $500. for the system and a couple games I'll take a wait and see attitude

True paleo that the xbox will eventually be outdated, but your video card, motherboard, and cpu will be outdated also.
Also i was not trying to compare a computer(I use cpu and computer loosely) and a game system, there too totally different systems, and should not be compared(which you pointed out also). The only reason i compared them was because galleglagh referred to the xbox as a lowend cpu.Which its not a computer, its a game system. And im glad to hear your response about the bottleneck situation. I posed this question many of times, with no definate answers. The databus of the processer bottlenecks the video card to some certain degree, because its a 32bit width databus. So the video card still receives input from the processer, hence bottlenecking it somewhat. I dont know if its by much, but i think its enough to make a signficant difference. But these newer video cards do pump out 256bit of memory data, to the the monitor. But it still needs info from the cpu and ram. This is only a theory i have concluded, because i read alot on it. Also another bottleneck could be the ram on video card, because its dram, and must be refreshed every 18.5 seconds. But maybe this problem has be resolved by the newer ddr ram, but its still dram.I know you know all this and im not telling you paleo, im really telling this to others. I know you know alot more than pete, so im sure you get frustrated when people like me tell you something and your like i know that and i know alot more than that. So i give the upmost respect on these forums.
