I need help with an old computer with Windows 3.1. I was always working fine. Now when I try to start it, everything goes fine starting up MS-DOS, it gets to the screen that shows Windows 3.1 & licensing info. Then it goes to DOS and says "Error loading system.drv".

I cannot start it in safe mode - how do I fix this - please help me!!

Hi and Welcome,

It sounds like the system.drv file is corrupted. You can try downloading the file from www.winfiles.com (http://www.winfiles.com) to a floppy and then copy it to the C:\Windows\System directory.

Not sure if the files on the original floppies for 3.1 are zipped, but if they're not, you can just copy from the floppy to the harddrive. Or, you can use the Extract command. Post back if further questions.

Good luck.

Sure your not getting out of memory messages?? or HImem.sys.is missing or not loaded? Pete The moderator is real good at these 3.1 but I'll give a small try It's been to long.
I can probobly get you into your computer but you'll have to go from there.

RE-START YOUR COMP. PRESS CTRL>ALT>DEL. If it does not respond wait at least 10 seconds turn off the power>wait another 30 seconds and turn it back on after she starts MS-DOS should display the following>>STARTING MS-DOS,, While the text is on the screen >>Press and release the F5 key a command should appear on the screen?? She should start with the a basic configuration..

You'll have to take it from there on your configuration? Is this MS-DOS 6.2 that you have?? How old and what type of machine is this??
Sorry i can't be a lot more help
