I had to exchange my mainboard as it died.:o
After the exchange the system wouldn't startup : it boots and the windows progressbar appears and fills up until the end but nothing happens afterwards (after loading MUP it hangs)

As I made updates regurlarly and also kept a SECOND installation (JUST for backup and restoring) of Win2000 on the same PC I should have any possibility to preserve SOFTWARE and USERS after reinstalling a fresh copy of Win2000 instead of the SECOND installation IF it is possible at all.

Does anybody know how to avoid reinstalling all software and users by using part of my backups?

See http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/other/motherboard/win2k.htm for a few ideal.

How different are the two motherboards? The more different (especially different chipsets) - the more difficult this will be.

Can you boot into safe mode?

I know with XP that situation just requires a repair installation and everythings good to go.

Doesnt win2k also have an option to repair an installation? have you tried that.

Windows 2000 Pro has Restore Console (4 floppies) to load then repair the OS.
