I have win. 98 installed, and was under the impression that i had scheduled my defrag to run every week, however after checking i found that it had never run once, so i tried, and tried and tried http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif to run it but it won't complete! every time it gets to about 90% complete it starts again stating, "driver contents changed, restarting" is this s'posed to happen, if not how can i fix this? all replies gratefully recieved!

thanks

The Disk Defragmenter for Windows 98 (DEFRAG.EXE) may start and not complete its task. If repeated attempts to defragment the drive are unsuccessful, it may be because an application is writing to the disk. The Disk Defragementer cannot share access to a drive with other tasks.

An application loading automatically at startup may interfere with DEFRAG. Run DEFRAG before applications load at startup by adding a value for DEFRAG.EXE /ALL to the RunServicesOnce key in the registry.

Note: You can use your computer while Disk Defragmenter is running, however, Disk Defragmenter restarts if the contents of the drive you are defragmenting change.

Select defrag.inf found in the \tools\mtsutil folder on the Windows 98 CD
Right-click defrag.inf, and choose Install from the menu
The next time you start your computer, Windows will defragment your drive(s) automatically.

You may want to do a complete virus check to does your scan disk complete ? what virus you would be looking for is the "Love" it usually nails that part.

You have two choices:

1) Get a copy of Norton Utilities and use their speed disk. It's better and faster than defrag anyway.

2) Defrag in safe mode.

Either way your problem will be solved.

Tips to Run Scandisk and Defrag in Safe Mode
Have you ever tried running scandisk and defrag only to have it constantly restart and never finish. To solve this problem you have to boot-up in safe mode then run scandisk and defrag.

Booting In Safe Mode
When you boot Win98 or WinME in Safe Mode, your system's startup files and device drivers will be bypassed, allowing Win98 or WinME to start up in a basic mode.
Turn on the computer and wait until you hear the Power On Self Test (POST) beep, which should occur about 10 seconds into the boot process. After hearing the beep, press the F8 key. You should enter the Microsoft Win98 or WinME Startup Menu text menu. (If you don't see the menu, you probably pressed F8 at the wrong time. Reboot the computer and try again.) Highlight selection 3 (Safe Mode) and press the ENTER Key.

Win98 or WinME will start using the most basic configuration possible, bypassing any startup files you've set. You'll see Safe Mode in each of the Desktop's four corners. you now can make changes to your display driver, as specified elsewhere in this article.

Scandisk
Scandisk searches storage media for errors that corrupt data and causes inefficient drive performance. You can run scandisk by clicking Start; pointing to Programs, Accessories, System Tools; and then clicking Scandisk. It is recommended you run scandisk on your hard drive once a week.

Defrag
Defragmenter organizes the data on your hard drive for efficient access of data. You can run defrag by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, Accessories, and System Tools. It is recommended you run defrag at least twice a year.
