OS = WinMe. I am trying to defrag an office computer and it restarts every few percentage points. I've closed McAfee, screensaver, and anything else I thought might be running (e.g.,eliminated gator). There apparently is something running, but I can't figure out what it is. The system monitor "kernel" graph shows 100% in color which I presume means 100% is in use. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about system monitor yet, and time is ALWAYS a constraint. How do I find out what is running in the background?

Check the running programs in Task Manager. CTRL - ALT- DEL once will open it. Then you can check what's running. A frequent culprit is MS Office indexing service. (FindFast)

It might be better to run in safe mode for defrag.

If you had Gator on this machine, there may well be other foistware too. It might be an idea to download and run SPYBOT (http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/) . unzip and run it. Before scanning, click online, and install all updates. Then scan, and fix everything labelled in RED

Also running defrag in SafeMode cures a host of ills.....
