Don't know if everyone knows about this or not but thought it better to post it.

Witin this link http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/darnit_3.htm#warning I found the following info.

IMPORTANT WARNING FOR USERS OF HIJACKTHIS AND CWSHREDDER

Taken from http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/1103/11.php
If you have ever downloaded HijackThis or CWShredder, it is urgent that you upgrade to the latest versions before using them again. If you mirror these programs on your own site, it is extremely urgent that you update the files.

Due to a new variant of the CWS Trojan, using either HijackThis or CWShredder on an infected Win98 or WinME computer may lead to severe damage to that computer. You must update to the very newest versions of these programs before using either of them again.

I don't know what the details of the problem are. I haven't been following the latest postings at the message board. The problem is serious enough that people have had to reinstall Windows on their computers.

To upgrade these programs, you merely delete the old files and replace them with the new. The links are below.

Good idea ErnieK!! There have been several updates within the last couple of weeks. Actually running the old version of Hijack this to scan will not do any harm, but (insert favourite deity here ) help you if you try fixing something.

I have run Hijack This just once, several months ago. At the time I thought that the only item which remained on my computer was the log. I thought that if I wanted to run it again at some future date I would have to download it again.
However do I gather from this thread that in addition to the log I have a Hijack This programme installed somewhere on my computer.? I have done a search but could not find anything except the log.

Do I need to do anything to remove an old version if it exists?

So where'd you download it to? If you installed it on the fly it should be in there still. There's not a lot of HT that 'needs' updating...

HijackThis doesn't install, you unzip it and it runs...a standa lone executable applicatin (rare these days).

It does make on registry entry...the last accessed path.

The log remains.

Most people runit from a tneporary location, so if you clean your temp files then you got rid of it.

As far as it goes there is nothing you need to do, because if you do run it again from a fresh donload it will run the one you unzip and not the old version.

I keep HT in a folder on my desktop along with the shortcuts to all my security progs. That way everything is easy to find. Including another couple of run once for protection programs (HTA stop for example)

Thanks for the replies. I guess I had it in a temp folder which has long since been deleted and that is why I cannot find anything except the log. Thanks again.
