At our companies network we have 2 DC's running W2K Server and performing DNS and DHCP. I just bought a new Toshiba laptop for one of our execs and upgrade the OS to XP Pro (it came with home edition). I joined it to the domain and have it using dhcp. When I boot up the laptop it obtains a valid IP, but the is now network connectivity. I can't ping it from another computer and I can't use a domain logon. If I wait about 5 minutes after bootup, the connectivity will be there and I'll have no problems. Does anyone have any idea why it take a while for this to happen?

Thanks,

The first thing I always do with a network problem is suspect inferior cables.

Your problem could be the "task scheduling bug". Maybe this link (http://asia.cnet.com/itmanager/netadmin/0,39006400,39108281,00.htm)
will help (re second suggestion).

Thank you. I gave it a try but didn't get any results. I also forgot to mention the we do have two other XP machines on the network that are functioning properly.

I don't know if it's related to a problem I suffered trying to connect win 98 and xp machiens together - things took ages to resolve. The solution was posted on this site - you can try the suggestions.
dhcp not working between machines (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17192)

here's the summary:

"On the XP box, go to Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Service. Check that the following services are shown as Started and are set to Automatic:

Computer Browser
Network Connections
Server
Workstation"

I've tried both solutions, but neither solved the problem. For the 2 other XP Pro machines on our network I did a fresh install of 2000 Pro and upgraded them to XP Pro. With the problem machine I left the factory install of XP Home Edition and upgraded it to XP Pro. Obviosely the factory install has a bunch of crap on it and I'm wondering if some setting is carrying over. What do you guys think?

are you plugging it into a cisco switch if so try enabling portfast. I do know xp home does not support domains but I doubt that is your issue since you upgraded it to pro and have joined it to the domain already most likely NIC or cable issue look for CRC errors.
