Hi
I have a Mat****a DVD-ROM SR-8586 on my machine running Win2k. It plays CD no problems at all. I have never tried to play a DVD but decided to give it a try and have come up with a problem. It plays the first few second then freezes. I have tried different player but now realise it the drivers not the player? In device manager all is ok, the current driver is Microsoft signed so assume it all ok?? Should I look for the original drivers, any ides on a good player as well?

Drivers would be a place to start for that problem, but you might also want to try inserting the disc while holding down the shift key to make sure copy protection isnt fouling things up.

Budfred, Mat**** is a Panasonic brand that the great censoring software these board use think is is naughty word:D :D
At the moment I am using Zoom player and I have just downloaded another, will give that a go. I have also read someting about Codecs, I though I had them all installed but maybe not??:(
Pave, I will try the shift key as advised, this is a BBC DVD (RED DWARF) and I have got a feeling its not copy protecetd but one never knows!!

I didn't know there was any censoring software here... I thought it was all manual, in which case brand names would not get censored...

You could try spelling the brand with a space or a comma between each letter.:D
I believe th proper spelling is Matsus*ita (*=h).
But I didn't know the "dirty word" filter blocked stuff in the middle of words....

Actually, they aren't a Panasonic brand, they are the corporation that owns Pansonsic and several other companies....
mjc, is it true that we have a censor program on here....

I'm not mjc but...
Yep, Ixl added a word filter a while back to help us keep the language decent without as much editing. For a while mjc and I spent a respectable amount of time editing out foul language-which has lessened quite a bit since then-so our fearless leader thought the addition of the filter would help out. It's been working pretty well for several months, but as you can see it does have its drawbacks and idiosynchracies
Same as mjc I didn't know it would spot part of a product name as unacceptable language though...kinda funny actually...
For the problem at hand, drivers or codecs would be where I'd start too.

MJC the spelling is -- M-A-T-S-H-I-T-A without the hyphen in between. I thought all vB boards had filtering?? and at least part of the word is or could be classed as what you Americans call cussing??
Anyway, thanks for the imput guys, its great to start a thread and find 8 posts which are talking about the spelling or censorship, whith the exception of Paleo Pete who at lest did mention the problem I have.
I have done a bit more digging and think it could be MPEG2 codecs, I have MPEG4 installed but cant find where to download the MPEG2, anyone got any ides. And dont say do a google search as that was the first stop. All that you get is 2 million search engines wanting to do the search!! frustrating:(
I have also noticed that the DVD changes its region from 2 to 1, any ideas why, I only have about 3 more goes at changing it and dont know what happens after that:eek:

I believe after the last change allowed, you are locked into whatever it is at that point. The regions refer to the area you are in. The available DVDs in that region are supposed to play only when the player is set to that area. I am not how it is supposed to prevent piracy, but apparently that was the point. I think it had to do with people in Asia sending videos to family members in the US to be copied and trying to prevent them from working here... In any case, it would be a good idea to figure out what region you need and leave it there...
I will gladly refund your money for the time used up in discussing the censorship issue, please submit an itemized bill indicating exact costs....:D
