I just upgraded to Windows XP Home Edition from Windows 98. Everything seems to have installed ok. I have dual boot with Windows 98 or XP. Before the upgraded I used Windows 98 Backup (under accessories) and have all my data(Outlook flders in .pst and other Word/Excel files) and some other start up stuff, saved on disk. None of my Office 2002 applications were 'visable' from XP, so I resinstalled them. I now need to Restore my data from disk back into XP but it seems that XP is using a different way to backup/restore as the Backup/restore function is not there in XP. The new restore function seesm to work like a 'goback' type function.
How do I get my data back into my applications now running in XP? I can go back & forth (Via a reboot) between XP & WIndows 98 and see and use my old stuff.
Since my old data is on my PC how do I 'get it over ' to the new XP system?
Did I go about this the right way or should I have done something different?

Thanks
Cas

Backup is not installed by default in XP home you have to install it your self.

Do the following to do so.

Insert your XP CD and go to Ntbackup.msi file which is found in the Valueadd\Msft\Ntbackup directory on the CD

Win9x uses the following file format QIC and XP uses BKF

I do not know if they are compatable with each other, hopefully someone else will be able to confirm either way.

No, Windows XP will not restore your backup's from Windows 98.As they've always been since the days of Win95 and WinNT, the two back up file formats are completely incompatible. There are a few workarounds though,

1. Restore the backup in win98 partition, find any other backup utility which lets you save your backup as zip files, save it and restore it in XP.
2.(suggested by kelly MVP)Download ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/msback.exe the W9x MSBACKUP program and run it in compatibility mode on the WinXP computer.Place this file on a floppy disk, open a DOS window, and execute the file. The MSBACKUP.EXE program and supporting files will be extracted to the same floppy. You must then run the install program. Create a temporary directory on the hard drive and then command A>INSTALL C:\TEMP (or whatever directory name you made on the hard drive). MSBACKUP will then run and attempt to set itself up.It is during this process that some users tend to find WinXP not allowingthe program to proceed.
3. Download the 30 day trialware Backup MyPC fromwww.stompinc.com which recognizes .qic.

Since you are running a dual boot, why can you not just copy the files directly from the Win98 folders to where you now want them ?? - or did you delete all your data files after backing them up into qic files.

Not quite sure what you are getting at shanamuga. If this was a dual boot installation as stated, then there should be no difficulty in seeing everything on the Win98 installation. Admitedly any Office Applications would not function from within the new installation - but there should be no problem in copying/pasting any files as such - and notably any doc, xls, pst, or other data files.

If the Win98 installation is truly not visible then that is a separate problem to address. It must be there somewhere since it can still be booted into. The question is really "where are the win98 installation files" ?? or how can they be unhidden ??
