My network card did a similar think under windows 98 I thought that it was a problem with the network. First of all check in your controll panel under the system icon and see if the network adapter is detected, if not try and auto detect it. If the system doesn't find anything you may just try and reinstall the drivers that came with the card, if you don't have the driver and you rely on the drivers provided by windows you may want to try and find new or updated drivers on the web page for your adapter. If all else fails you may want to check and make sure that the card is installed properly, fully seated in the socket. You may want to check that first, that ended up being my problem. You may have a conflict with your sound card or modem if you have one installed. If that is your problem you'll need to talk to someone more knowledgable than me, for starters try and take out all but the video card and the network card and get everything to run and then shut down and start up a couple of times and see if the problem still occurs. If not add your sound card and modem one at a time untill you can narrow down the conflicting card, then come back and ask for more help, hopefully somebody will be able to help you out.
