For the last months I had been burning the cd's using Windows Media player, but it is too slow, so I installed Nero 6. I've been trying to burn an audio cd, but my Nero doesn't recognize the cd recorder. The only recorder it can use is the image recorder. It's not a compatibility matter, as I have burned many cd's with the previous version of Nero, and my cd recorder (HP cd-writer 8200e) isn't in the list of incompatibilities of Nero. Does anybody out there know how to solve this?

Is the burner listed at all in Recorder >> Choose Recorder under the virtual recorder "Image Recorder"?

Is this a new installation of Nero 6 or an upgrade?

No. Only the image recorder. When I try to make a new compilation, or open an old one, all the cd drives appear. I click on the cd writer, and continue, but when I get to the explorer to choose the files from my Hdd I want to burn, the only option I'm given is the image recorder.
This is a new installation. It's a demo version: but it's supposed to have full functionality until expiration day.

If the drive can be seen by windows (which version?) and used by other software then it sure sounds like a Nero 6 related bug. If you had Nero 5.5 or earlier working on the PC previously one wonders if it was properly or completely uninstalled before installing Nero 6.

Suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Nero and maybe going back to an earler version if only to see if it still works under the earlier version.

And ... does Nero Express fail as well ... or perhaps it doesnt come with the demo?

The drive is seen by my Windows XP Pro. The same problem occurs with Nero Express.
I uninstalled the program, used Regsupreme to clean registry from all entries by Nero and Ahead, rebooted and reinstalled.
But the problem is still there.
In the Nero info tool, my drive E: which is a Toshiba read-only CD rom drive, appears as a recorder, and my drive F: which is the actual recorder, appears as an unidentified read-only CD rom drive.

In Device Manager, mark the box Show hidden/Unused devices and see if there are any duplicates listed under CD-ROMs, if so remove them.

No, there are no duplicates. Can it be a driver problem? I was checking the drivers for the recorder, because in the device manager it is listed as a generic cd rom drive. I tried to install the latest drivers from HP, but it won't let me: it finds no drivers in the path I give it.

You've reinstalled the software so now might be the time to try reinstalling the hardware. Boot to Safe Mode and remove all theCD ROMs from Device Manager. Turn off and disconnect the cable to both drives. Boot into Safe Mode again and check that there are no CD ROMs in Device Manager - if any show remove them once more.

Turn off and attach just one CDROM (the CDRW) then start up normally and see if it is recognised correctly by windows and by Nero. Then, if all is well, repeat but reconnect your other CDROM. Keep an eye on the jumpering while you are doing this one by one installation.

I booted to safe mode, uninstalled both drives, disconnected all cables, booted again in safe mode to make sure they were gone, turned off, connected the recorder, rebooted in normal mode and windows recognized the cdrw, but didn't let me choose the drivers I had downloaded from HP, but installed the drive "by itself". I still have the problem, only now I can't record with the Windows media player like I used to. I'm so confused, maybe I should restore system, forget about trying Nero, and try Roxio or something else.

Wish I'd found this before but you are not unique with this Nero Upgrade problem and your HP CDRW. See:- http://www.mp3machine.com/software/Nero_win32/wwwboard/messages/2074.shtml regarding reinstating an older version of the wnaspi32.dll file.

Lets get your drivers back first. If you have the files extracted to a known location it should be straighforward enough to Update the drivers for the CDROM in Device Manager and point them to your extracted files. (Did you extract the driver files from the download or is it another type of self-extracting archive - it sounds like the new hardware wizard just wasn't able to find the correct inf file).

From THIS (http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/drivers/80/80738.htm) it appears you must first unzip and then run the self extractor file. Check the readme as to whether this should be run BEFORE or AFTER physically attaching the CDROM (which I hadnt realised was a USB device). The exact sequence of whether the drivers are installed before or after the physical connection can be critical to the success of installing some USB devices.

I downloaded and unzipped the file to C:8200e-xp. Then I double-clicked the file cdrw_usb which is an exe, and it unpacked itself to
C:HP_USB_CD-RW_drivers.
When I reboot the machine, it doesn't run the wizard for new hardware, but installs the device by itself.
When I run the wizard and point to those files, it says it can't find the right drivers in that location.

USB, as previously mentioned can, be tricky. The following is taken from:-

HP Support (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&softitem=co100en&prodId=hpcdwriter18534&lc=en&sw_lang=en&pagetype=software)

Trouble Installing the USB Drivers
If the hardware wizard does not automatically start, try the following:
Resetting the USB CD-Writer.
1)Shut down and turn off the computer.
2)Unplug the power cord from the back of the CD-Writer drive to reset the drive. Plug the power cable back into the CD-Writer.
3)Disconnect and re-connect the USB cable from the CD-Writer to the computer.
4)Remove all other USB devices, except for the keyboard and mouse if USB devices.
5)With the CD-Writer plugged back in, restart the computer. The new hardware should start once the computer is restarted.

Removing Previously Installed Drivers
1)Search for the following files and delete if found: HPUATA.INF, HPUATA.SYS, HPIOSATA.INF, HPIOSATA.PDR, EUIOSMSD.PDR, EUIOSMSD.INF, EUSBMSD.SYS.
2)Shut down and turn off the computer.
3)Restart the computer.
4)The new hardware wizard should start once the computer is restarted.

***The appropriate files will be restored during the USB CD-Writer driver installation.***

Just finished doing all that, also unplugged the usb scanner, but nothing happened.
The current drivers are these ones:
C: WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C: WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys
C: WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C: WINDOWS\System32\storprop.dll
These drivers were installed from Windows XP installation disc, when I formatted and installed.
When I uninstall them and install the new drivers from Hp, the wizard won't accept the Hp files I give it.

Sorry you are having such problems but all I can suggest (other than a restore) is to try removing all the stuff again (including removing the USB entries in device manager) and starting over again.

Thank you Paul for your help. I think I' remove *@#%&$ Nero and try everything all over again, then I'll contact Hp. Thank you very much.

I really like Nero (particularly because of its Mt Rainier support within InCD) but having seen your post I won't be in a hurry to upgrade from 5.5 which has been very stable.
