According to someone who seems to be in the know, Firebird is definitely a potential rival for IE.
Joel on Software :

Where it gets interesting, is, approximately, today, because, for the first time, the Mozilla Firebird browser has finally caught up with Internet Explorer. After downloading virtually every Mozilla release over the last three years, this is the first browser I'm actually going to make my default web browser.
But don't think that everything is fixed. Take a look at the Firebird forums :

My post is on Mozilla Firebird 0.7

It is not finished yet. It needs easier plugin loading, and it does not even have a official installer yet but someone made available a darned good unofficial one.
The way it works is people have nightly beta builds and the builds have the bugs worked out of them, hence the bug posts in that forum. When the code is stable it gets put into sucessive known stable releases.

There is someone here who has built his own Mozilla and Firebird browsers, you can download them from a link he is providing in the thread. I don't remember who it is, maybe someone can give us this information.

I saw the thread too, it was Mozilla (full) build. I will look to see if I can find the link for you. I think it is here (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26112)

I have a link for Firebird 0.7
