For anyone who has ever had to chase down an obscure codec to be able to view an AVI file I just recently came across the following:
GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) - which among other things is able to identify the codec required for playback of a specific file. Very easy to use.
CoDec List (http://www.pcsupport.dk/support/codec.htm) - A fairly comprehensive list of codecs by name along with a number of links for locating them.
