I'm using IE 5.5 on a W98SE system and
every time I hit the ENTER key in a form I loose the focus
of the browser window; need to select the window again to continue
typing in it. Apparently when this happens no other window is
activated. Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi lupin124114, and welcome to the forums here at http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif.
I'm sorry I can't help you with your problem, but I can tell you from a security standpoint you're better off with IE 6. If you've got a broadband connection, it's worth the time it takes to upgrade. If not, I think you can order a CD-Rom from MS to upgrade.
Not trying to redirect this thread - maybe someone else can help you directly with your problem. Just wanted to chip in what I know.

There are, I believe, some types of gackware (thanks mjc!) that can cause this sort of problem.
It might be an idea to download Hijack this from HERE (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) , unzip and run a scan with it.
Post the log in this thread so we can have a look and see if anything like that is running.

Do you also lose the focus if you hit the submit button?
Is this invariable on multiple websites?
Do you have a url we could try out?

Thank you all for your help.
For Paul, I most often realize this problem when using web mail (Yahoo, Hotmail etc). So no specific web site. Does not occur when hitting SEND button. Thanks. Lupin

If things work correctly when hitting the button rather than hitting Enter then this is (IMHO) just a result of the way the html on that page has been written - so not much you can do about that unless it relates to something like javascript, which if you disable might affect other functionality of the page in question.

Paul it hasn't to do with the html page cause don't have the same problem when accessing the same page from another computer!!!
Also just found out that I have the same problem when writing an url in the address field of the browser and hitting ENTER!. thanks

Perhaps you'd better take David's advice and run HijackThis.
You could also try repairing IE (not that it ever seems to help very much) and also reset the Web Settings under Tools > Internet Options > Programs.
