Tonight I installed a third hard drive in my computer it was a 40GB Western Digital on a Promise Ultra 66 PCI IDE controller card. After installing the hardware I put my boot disk in and started it in DOS tried to run fdisk 3 times couldn't get it to run it would start checking drive integrity it would hang at about 45% so I booted to windows and ran Partition Magic I partitioned it into 4 10GB drives Partition Magic rebooted so it could finish setting up the drives. After it was done I went to "my computer" just to see if the new drives were there and found them there and also found that I could read and write from them http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif I thought that new drives had to be formatted before you could use them or is that a thing of the past http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

With 3 hard drives a CD-RW and a DVD ROM Ihope my power supply holds out http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yes you are still required to Run Fdisk and format for your new hard drive to allow access to it

Are you sure Partition Magic didn’t do this for you?

If the drive failed at 45 % using fdisk
I for one would be very careful of what I put on that drive.
You may not be able to recover some of it.

Until a complete drive test and surface test was run I wouldn’t trust it.

I did the same thing using promise card and partition magic. Partition Magic did a format. I then tried to install windows and could not. After pulling my hair out and drinking a few, says I dumb dumb no drivers for promise card, because no o/s. Moved drive off promise card to idee and it worked, but you might know this already. One day I will be a pro too Thanks Andy
