hi,
I just got my DSL connection and I was wondering if I am on line when the browser is off. Basically when i activate internet explorer i go directly on line without any warning so i was wondering if the connection goes off when i turn the browser off or if it stays up.

Load a personal firewall program, the monitor in the system tray will tell you when traffic is coming in or out. Zone Alarm, Sygate, Kerio are all good ones.

If I understand correctly, a DSL connection is always on. Like you said it gives no warning, so it is a good idea to run a firewall to keep out unwanted lurkers. I am just going to get DSL in the near future, so if i'm off base someone will let us know.

Certain DSL types are always on and your's certainly sounds like that type. I have a "dialup" DSL which allows me only 2 hours online and then I have to disengage and redial in. It isn't truly ever disconnecting, but it doesn't have access unless I dial in. If your's is instant, it is always on....

Part of my dsl modem installation, and probably most, there is a program added to the programs list as well as a tray icon that tells you when it is on. I can disconnect and reconnect at any time by choosing appropriately at the program options menu. You can also stop it from starting at boot-up by unchecking it at the start menu in system configuration.
