I was helping my grandson once again! as his pc had really slowed down. I had installed spybot on it and warned him about using MSN messenger/hotmail He says Napster is just for listening to music.??
The porno sites keep streaming in plus all the other usual junk Spybot is supposed to run on a regular schedule but when I ran it, it picked up 53 instances of spyware. Is there a better program? Also he keeps getting a message about the presence of a trojan horse (AVG antivirus) Running the anti virus does not remove the message. How do we clean up the pc thoroughly and keep the trash at bay? (He uses Opera 7.03 as a browser and has set no pop ups)

Hi,
First update the Spybot program. Close the browser and scan, then remove the red items and also click the immunize feature so you won't keep having to clean the same stuff repeatedly. You can also click to block known bad websites to keep the computer cleaner. Reboot when done.
Adaware is also a good removal program, use it the same way.
There is also a manual spyware removal program called "Hijack This" that allows a listing of possible problems, you post it on sites like PC Guide or TomCoyote or SpywareInfo and experts can tell you which items to remove.
We need the message the AV gives for the "trojan" program in order to figure out how to remove it.
Napster just went back online as a music download pay service, which is a legitimate service. You don't want Kazaa, Limeshare, Bearshare, and the like as they open your machine to all kinds of vermin/trojans/viruses, etc.

It would probably be a good idea to run HijackThis and post the log here. You can go to mjc's site (http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/) to read about it and download it. Copy/paste the log here after you run it and don't fix anything until the experts interpret it for you. Make sure you actually install it if you want to be able to go back later and restore anything any removes...

Already mentioned, but just to emphasize -- be sure to reboot after running each of those cleanup programs (assuming you have requested them to clean up something.) The reason is that they actually do the cleanup as part of the boot process.
