ok, I've got a "Tiny" 550Mhz, 128Mb, 16 Gb. On board video.
I'm trying to upgrade my 128 to 256. The stick goes in fine, which the BIOS & Win98 recognises. However, when I try and run a full screen game, (eg: my Excellent Airfix dogfighter, or millionaire) the prog/game ends after a random time and returns me to the desktop. Other less demanding progs are a joy to use, eg Flt sim 2000 etc
Also, the computer seems a lot less stable and crashes a LOT more with the extra ram. One reason why I got this was to improve the reliability of the system.
When i take the stick out, & back to the 128 Meg, everything is back to normal and fine.
Yes, yes I've upped the drivers for the video. So it's not that.

Sounds like the memory is incompatible with the motherboard to me. What kind of motherboard do you have. Is it pc100 or pc133(memory), you know you cant run pc100&133 at the same time, but if you are this could be the problem.
Go to www.crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com) and find your motherboard model and get a stick there. Im guessing your old ram is pc100.

The PC100-PC133 is the speed that the memory is rated to run at...the speed it actually runs at is that of the bus, so if you are running a machine that has a FSB of 100MHz then that is the speed the memory will run at (unless you have the option in BIOS to run at bus+33 for the memory...but that is another story)and you fill it up with PC133 all you have done is put memory that is rated to run faster in a slower machine. With a 550 you are probably at 100MHz FSB, maybe 66MHz. It is likely that it is a memory problem, but more of the nature of either ESD (electro-static discharge) or just poor quality.

The sticks are 100 and 133 respectively, & the mobo is 100Mhz. I realise that the faster one will work in the slower board, just not using so much effort.
I got the stick online, from pc world. What I'll do is to replace the old one with the new one, so still running on 128 and that'll tell me if it's the stick/ESD or a compatibility prob.

Hey,
It's usually recommended to install the fastest/largest stick of memory in the first DIMM slot that the computer reads from. Don't know if that is an issue with your situation, but thought I would mention it.

ok then, I've tried another(borrowed) stick (a 128/100)along with my original 128/100 and is still causing grief. At least it discounts ESD or poor quality memory. I've also tried them the other way around.
So come on chaps/chapettes get thinking.
What options do you have for memory in BIOS...if you can try setting all the memory to CAS3...
