Tonight I was asked to look at a fairly new dell notebook that wasn't running well. I set up and updated Mcafee virus scan (which was installed but not doing anything), ran windows update, installed Spybot S&D, updated it, and let it clean off 93 different things, and immunized. I turned on the microsoft firewall, and downloaded firebird to help out with the browser pop up problem.
I'm quite sure there is something still lurking somewhere inhibiting things. The performance has increased but is still sluggish, and IE seems to get a mind of its own and repeatedly go to some website that I did not ask it to go to. I ran Hijack This (log below). I was wondering if there is anything else someone would recommend I do to this machine to clean it up, short of a clean Windows install.

Thanks
Drew

First, in Add/remove programs, uninstall Help express/Alset help.

Then have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

O3 - Toolbar: PowerSearch - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D3FA-F27BA787AD2D} - C:\PROGRA~1\POWERS~1\Toolbar\pwrswmda.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {28B48FFD-A833-4C56-8318-A84075199CB3} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [emsw.exe] C:\WINDOWS\emsw.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [couponsandoffers] wjview /cp "C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers\System\Code" Main lp: "C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HXIUL.EXE] C:\Program Files\Alset\HelpExpress\Jennifer Croonquist\HXIUL.EXE (if not uninstalled from Add/Remove)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HELPEXP.EXE] C:\Program Files\Alset\HelpExpress\Jennifer Croonquist\Client\HelpExp.exe (if not uninstalled from Add/Remove)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [emsw.exe] C:\WINDOWS\emsw.exe

O8 - Extra context menu item: Coupons - file://C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers\System\Temp\couponsandoffer
s_script0.htm

Reboot after fixing, and delete
C:\WINDOWS\emsw.exe << file
C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers << folder
C:\Program Files\Alset\ (if not uninstalled from Add/Remove)

@david eaton, I am curious about this

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {290D3301-F85B-415B-B048-162BBF5E7721} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\scmutil.dll

Do you have any idea, what it is?

When I posted I wasn't sure, but having seen it several times at SWI, it looks like it's one of the random name/CLSID gackwares! Can never remember the names.

drewbob Fix it in Hijack this.

If you can, before fixing it, zip it and send it to here (submissions@mjc1.com) (please include a link to this thread in the email).
