I'm having trouble getting logged into MSN and/or Windows Messenger.

I'm running Windows XP Pro. These were freshly installed after I formatted a few days ago. Everything else seems to be working fine. I'm on a P3 833mhz Dell Dimension 4100.

I know my internet connection is working, because:
A) I can post this.
B) I can get on AOL Instant Messenger.

Here are the error messages I'm getting:

From MSN Messenger (6.1):

We were unable to sign you in to the .NET Messenger Service, possibly because of a problem with your Internet connection. Please try again later. 0x81000370

One time this also stated that I was behind a firewall that might be causing the problem (I checked Norton, I have no hardware firewalls).

From Windows Messenger:

Signing into .NET Messenger Service failed because the password is incorrect or the sign-in name does not exist. If you have forgotten your password, click Help in the main window, and then click Help Topics.

Can anyone help?

can you sign into your passport account? (I.E the email account you sign into MSN Messenger with. in my case hotmail.com, also msn.com etc...) if not, then it's a problem with your account. if yes, then a problem with the connection.

what is your internet connection? DSL? Cable? Dial up? if DSL or Cable, some modems have built in firewalls that (so far as I know) wouldn't be detectable by your computer, because they're not on your computer, they're on the modem. also, some hubs, routers, and gateways also have these, so if you're sharing your internet connection, you may have a firewall. for example, I have 3 firewalls-one in my cable modem, one in my wireless router, one in my computer. the only one my computer knows about is on my computer.

I don't know exactly...

...I try to login, and I get "This Page Cannot Be Displayed", instantly. It's as if the computer isn't even "trying".

I tried getting on MSN on a different computer, and it worked.

I don't know how it could be with the modem (cable) because it used to work before I formatted.

Did you apply the Messenger updates since reinstalling XP?

Remember there was an update that went into effect back in October that effectively locked out the non-updated versions.

Yes - I'm running MSN Messenger 6.1.
