Hi friends,
Our institute site does not have a hit counter. I want to include the hit counter using MS FrontPage. The page on which I wish to put the hit counter needs to be modified about once a month. My question is that when the modified page is uploaded, will the hit counter be reset to zero or continue with the number of previous hits? I would not have troubled you, if the uploading of the files were in my hands. We've to submit the modified pages to our service provider for uploading. Please do not suggest to change the service provider, since we do not have much choice.

Thanks and regards

Have you asked this question of your service provider? I would think they should know.:)

If you are using the Hit Counter that comes with FrontPage then the webhost must support Front Page Extensions for the counter to work. That being the case:-

"After you add a hit counter to a page, you can reset the counter to any number. For example, you test a web site after you publish it to ensure that it is working properly, and then you find that the hit counter has been incremented by your own visits. You can reset the counter to zero to start it over or to just count site visitors".

So with the FrontPage Counter you can set and reset any number you desire. Many Webhosts will supply you with some code you can add to the page(s) to give you a hit counter regardless of whether or not they support FP extensions. Such customisation will vary greatly from webhost to webhost.

Other methods using server side scripting using perl/cgi, php and mysql etc can all provide hit counters but they will all depend on what package you have with your webhost.
