Could someone please explain why as soon as I install a 10\100 ethernet card into my system the system becomes very slow . Is there something I can do to remedy this? Should I use a different type of card?
Thanks.

The systems are all different.
These are new builds, some AMD's some PIII's, ethernet cards are installed
for high speed modems. Are there any settings I can change.
Thanks.

Check device manager for conflicts and try moving the NIC to a different slot, especially if it's PCI. I've seen references to this same problem and can't find anything with a quick look.
Yoda I disagree, I don't think this one is a homework question. Could be wrong, but it just doesn't sound like homework...

When you say the system(s) are slow. Do you mean when up and running or at boot-up?
If at boot-up this is most likely caused by the network card searching for the network (not explained myself to good - some-one else will hopefully clarify)

It was very noticable on bootup.
The system was a Pentium 4, 128meg DDR ram. I guess there is no way to change anything to make it boot faster. Kind of disappointing.
Thanks for your replies.

I installed the same card in my system and had no problems at all. Maybe you should try a different PCI slot like Paleo Pete was saying.
I'll get back to you on this one.

If its slower on boot up, chances are it is loading more drivers for your network. Its slower cause the registry is changed and it needs to connect all your computers

You may want to try these url's

They may help with the overall set-up in your system properties.
The above post sounds good.

Dear Darl:
Look in the Network Control Panel, what network protocols are being loaded. What network are you using. Are you hooked into a hub?
We need more information to help you, at least I do.
