My friend is quite upset. Other day her computer came on with signal input error. She cannot reboot, turn off, etc. This just stays on her screen. The only way to turn her computer off is to unplug it.

All it display on her monitor is system input error. Nothing else. She took to supposed computer repair place to get diagnostic run.

They told her they could get it to come on therefore she would have to replace the motherboard and then they could check for further problems.

Does anyone know if this sounds right or something I could tell her to specifically ask for or check myself.

She knows absolutely NOTHING about computers other than just learning to use one. I know that she told the repair place she knows nohting about computers.

I just don;t want her to get ripped off.

Thanks for any input ya'll can give me..

Hi mammacook1,

It sounds similar to the problem my friend is having with his system. He put it on 1 day and it said "Please check the signal cable" on his monitor. I may be a motherboard problem but I believe there is a problem with my power supply. I am going through the test tomorrow with my own system power supply, so I will let you know exactly what the problem is. I am going to attach mine to his system.

Is there any power at all for her system?

Yah, you have to be careful with these guys. Espeically if you tell them you know nothing. My buddies system I have here is a joke. It has no room for any expansion and he was given a mini tower with a 145watt power supply and that was only a year ago. Even if he tried to expand to an external h/d or cd burner the thing would probably blow-up. They do that on purpose to get you back to the store.

I even tricked a guy from Futureshop. I told him I was looking to boost my system power so it would be faster. I told him I knew nothing to see what he would say. He told me to replace the motherboard and microprocessor. I told him to "beat it" and I ended up buying more RAM which kicks ass by the way. Needless to say, he felt like a complete moron and I found out a thing or 2 about retail stores. So anyways, be careful.

I know I wouldn't be dishonest.

Could be power supply, motherboard, processer, ram. I would make sure all connections are secure, and then go from there.

Or it could actually be a loose connection to the monitor.....many newer monitors display something like that if they aren't getting a signal. Also if this thing is still under warranty then it would be best NOT to go openning it up and messing around inside but let the shop/company she bought it from do...even though it means down time, she paid for that warranty and might as well use it!
