Lavasoft, makers of AdAware, has dropped out of the COAST (Consortium Of Anti-Spyware Technology Vendors) organization that THEY started. The article over on the Lavasoft website is scathing to say the least.

Can you link the referenced site/article so we can see what you are talking about?

Nevermind, I think this might be the article: here (http://www.lavasoftnews.com/theeye/i15/a1.html)

Without knowing anything more than what I read in the article and what I have seen with sleazy vendors promoting spyware as legit antispyware products, I am impressed with their stance. I also agree that bringing in a monetary motive is likely to make at least the appearance of legitmacy dubious... I am always amazed that people will install antiSPAMware that was advertised via SPAM or antipopups that were advertised via a popup.... These are pretty much universally some of the worst tripe out there...

I suppose it is a lesson in how marketing/lobbying organizations are born.
Sort of how drug companies are viewed when cures are not as profitable as maintenance drugs, ie: vaccination programs not as profitable as treatment of symptoms.

It sounds like Lavasoft is saying that it is more like the drug companies intentionally infecting people so that they can expand the market for their drugs.... even more unethical that focusing on maintenance over prevention...

I agree, I suppose it is more like when a certain AV outfit was caught making test viruses to make their product scores look better.
