I have trouble login into my win98 PC ever since I installed DirectX 8.1 on it... How do I get rid of DirectX 8.1 and get back to my old version I was running?

Here's what happened: I was trying to install NBA Live 2003 and in the process choosed to install the DirectX that came with the game...everything seemed fine so far... I went on and setup my gamepad and then put on the NBA Live cd to play but the PC froze... I rebooted and everytime it gets to the login screen, it freezes.

Since then I unplugged the gamepad and uninstall the NBA Live from safe mode but it still freeze at login in Normal mode...
What do I do?

I think people have said you can't go back. However, you can certainly go forward and apparently version 9 contains some important security upgrades. You may want to go that way....

I appreciate the reply... You're probably right but now will I be able to install version 9 from safe mode? Because I cannot get in normal mode at all...

It might be a good idea to run a set of security scans as well. Antivirus, spyware and then probably HijackThis. With HijackThis make sure you put it in a folder so changes can be reversed if needed and it will allow you to save a log. Save the log and copy/paste it here so that the experts can check it out. Do not fix anything until it is checked out and you are given ideas about what to fix.... If you don't already that the programs you can find them in mjc's security thread... (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15179)

You could try DirectX Eradicator (http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/14/4/14-4-40.shtml)

I am not real experienced with these logs yet, but it looks like you have CWS on there and it would probably be a good idea to run CWShredder to clean it out. If you run it, note what it did, reboot and rerun HJT, then post the log again.... Go to the bottom of this page to get CWShredder.... (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html)

To shanmuga: didn't see your post previously thanks! I will try that and report here later.

But I doubt the CWS has anything to do with my PC freezing up at logon when I install DirectX?

Latest update: I went in safe mode and used the program Paul suggested and it succesfully removed DirectX and I was able to get in normal mode. I went to MS site and installed the latest version of DirectX and lo and behold, same problem.
SO I went into Step-by-Step mode and didn't load config and autobat and was able to get in Normal mode with DirectX installed. so I ran msconfig and choosed selective startup and unchecked load config and autobat... and since then I've been able to run my OS with DirectX so far with no problem. But I wonder how not loading config and autobat is affecting the PC? And why exactly prevent the PC to startup when I load these 2 system files and have DirectX version 8 and up on there?

Rick

Run Msconfig again and post what is listed in them

It won't show up in the Safemode hijackthis log because it (Safemode) doesn't load them at boot up.

NegLakay

Iremember they only have 1 line in them: it's ESS-Solo etc... I don't remember exactly the line written but it has to do with ESS-Solo... When I get home I'll find exactly what is written.

It is malware....

The Autoexec file has 3 lines in it:
1) @if exist C:\WININST0.400\SuWarn.Bat call C:\WININST0.400\SuWarn.Bat
2) @if exist C:\WININST0.400\SuWarn.Bat del C:\WININST0.400\SuWarn.Bat
3) C:\essolo.com
As for the Config system file, this is the only line in it:
1) DEVICE=C:\essolo.sys

OK following is the log of the latest HijackThis scan... This one was doen in Normal mode... anything I should be aware of? or get rid of, I feel there's still a spyware there somewhere as ZoneAlarm has picked up some unknown exe files trying to access the net...

You have Gator.Gator is one of the most pervasive and widespread advertising adware programs ... Download Spybot S&D from mjc's link (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15179), Run it and select everything in RED and delete them.

Reboot.

Rerun HijackThis and post the new log here.

The essolo is a sound card driver
It’s shouldn’t be needed .
In Fact it looks More like a dos or win3.1 driver

That would cause all kinds of problems.
If your sound card is working Then you in good shape with it being removed from the Autoexec and config files

About the sound card, it's working fine so I guess I don't need the essolo driver like you said Rick.

Looks pretty good, but read this:

Update Grokster
WiseUpdt.exe
Automatically updates the Grokster file sharing software. Beware of adware and spyware when using this type of program, for instance, Grokster contains CyDoor

about this: O4 - Startup: Check For Dope Wars Updates.lnk = C:\Program Files\Dopewars\WiseUpdt.exe

It might be a good idea to fix that one too...

Looks clean to me. Regarding WiseUpdt.exe, It's a auto-update file supplied with many software incluing grokster. I believe it's legit here, as it only updates the Dopewars, a game.
