View Full Version : BIOS hangs after memory count

I decided to try and slap together a working PC from the spare parts I had in my closet. Apparently the hard disk I had was broken down, but the other components were supposed to work correctly. So, my goal was to make a PC that would boot up DOS or some other small OS from a standard floppy drive.

All went well, the video card bios loads up, the main bios screen shows up, but after it counts the memory, it hangs.

Here's how it looks like (and yes, the memory amount is correct):

American
Megatrends AMIBIOS (c)1993 American Megatrends Inc., (energystar logo)

3712KB OK

Hit DEL if you want to run SETUP

(C) American Megatrends Inc.,
40-0E06-008021-00101111-121593-UMC498-H.

It won't accept any keyboard input, it won't try reading from the floppy drive, no nothing. I've checked the floppy drive; it works fine on a couple of other PC's. I've checked the keyboard, it works fine. I've tried different memory configurations with the same results. What's wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Have yo tried reloading the default values?

Also after you add memory, most often, you need to enter BIOS setup and then just save the changes, then exit...that will make the BIO recognize the fact that the memory configuration has changed. Since it won't take keyboard input you will need to either find the "Clear CMOS jumper" or remove the battery for a while...

It sounds to me like the bandwidth of one of the memoty modules is higher than the bandwidth of your motherboard. Check for it on the MB manual and in the stickers of the mem modules.
Also try booting with one module at a time.
Post back telling us any news.

Ok.

I tried to reset the CMOS by using the "clear CMOS jumper".. The battery is welded into the motherboard and since I don't have a soldering iron, I'll leave it alone. Anyway, nothing changed. It still hangs after it has counted the memory.

The crappy motherboard manual doesn't mention anything about memory bandwidth regulations .. As I mentioned, I've tried different memory configureations, one module at a time, modules of different memory amounts, modules of different model, etc. etc. It counts the memory correctly and then hangs.

I can't find any compatible speakers for the system so I can't hear any beeps..

I also noticed that sometimes the system displays the "Wait..." message instad of the "Hit del to enter setup" one before hanging.

One thing I forgot to tell you is that the floppy interface and all ports (except keyboard) are located on a separate IO-card. I've tried swithing the slots of the video card and the io card, but the result remains the same ...

Could this problem be caused by some faulty cache (or other) jumper settings?
