Visopsys is a new operating system for PC compatible computers. It has been in development since late 1997. The kernel is small, fast, and open source. It operates exclusively in 32-bit mode and features a simple but attractive interface, real preemptive multitasking, and virtual memory. The package includes a small suite of Unix- and DOS-like commands with which most users will be familiar, although Visopsys is not (and does not try to be) a clone of any existing OS. You can install and demo the distribution on a floppy disk.

An OS fitting on a floppy disk...? Makes me of that other one, Damnsmalllinux.
I am very curious.

I think he said he liked your post, Jeeza.:)
Here is another one that fits on a floppy......
http://www.menuetos.org/
It is small and fast.....
There are also several other Linux distros that are mde to fit on a floppy.

I know that one, but I don't understand very well what it is for.
It doesn't seem a real OS to me, it seems to have more to do with assembly coding or something. It looks like it's specifically geared to make it easy for assembly programmers.
Well, yes, it is more for programmers than end users.
But still it is a complete OS.

That MenuetOS looks interesting. If I only didn't have to eat or sleep then I would have time to mess with all the interesting stuff that's out there.

mjc,
If it is a complete OS, is it able to replace Windows 95/98/2000... for any kind of user ?

setoguro, I hope to surprise you by stating that you might be surprised by how much interesting stuff really is "out there"... :)
Just the day before yesterday I saw that there is yet another new operating system - EuOS - wholly coded in Euphoria.
If I am not mistaken, it's about the size of a floppy disk's capacity too.
First, I will describe my goals in the design of the EuOS kernel. I want (and I think most programmers will agree with me) a powerful, secure, stable, simple, and extendible operating system. It to be the simplest operating system ever for the average user. Also, the power user should be able to extend almost every part of the operating system. The kernel and the general design of the operating system should make it virtually immune to malicious programs. It should also be at least as stable as Linux, and it should warn the user before running unstable programs.

You are welcome. :)
I've played around with it a little, and I think that if I were doing some heavy duty programming, the I might use it.
Remember an OS doesn't have to have any fancy GUI features to be an OS....it needs to provide a means for software and hardware to interact.

Of course. DOS comes to mind.
But I would call MenuetOS an operating system with a slant. It's slanted towards a particular use of the computer.
