windows protection error

Hi,
Today I replaced a harddrive, Fdisked, formatted loaded win 98 s.e
It got as far as updating system settings for the final time but
just when it should have gone to desktop, "windows protection error"
stack overflow in config.sys file. How do I edit that? Even tried re-install of windows but now system freezes just before the protection error screen. The system is a K62-500 with 64MB ram, 8Meg Aopen video.
Tried changing video card & ram so far. Any suggestions?
