Hello there everybody, hope everyone's doing good.
I have this computer at work that freezes up every time MS Word 2k is launched. I do a Ctrl + Alt + Delete and instead of the Close Program window I get a white rectangle with words. The message says that the system is dangerously low on resources and that the program will be terminated. I click yes to close the program and then it will do the same thing for explorer and systray. After that I have to shut it off and restart the computer. Also before I shut the computer off I can click the start menu button but it has nothing on it, it's blank. I'm only having problems with just this one program, everything else is working fine. I've done the un-install, reinstall, repair and even went into the registry to remove it. I haven't try the system restore yet, I'll give it a try tomorrow. I'm reluctant to do anything outlandish - like reformat and do a clean install. I'm hoping there's something more sensible to fixing this problem. Windows ME is the OS. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Try This

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
In the Named box, type Normal.dot.
In the Look in box, select your local hard disk (or an alternate user template location if you are running Word from a network server).
Click Find Now to search for the file.
For each occurrence of Normal.dot that appears in the Find dialog box, right-click the file, and then click Rename on the menu that appears. Type a new name for the file, such as OldNormal.dot or Normal-1.dot, and then press ENTER.
Close the Find dialog box. Restart Word normally (without using the /a switch).
If Word starts correctly, you have resolved the problem. In this case, the problem is a damaged Normal.dot template.

Are you running this computer for long periods of time without a reboot? Win9x and Me have a problem releasing System Resources once a program is closed.

If you've been using various programs on the computer before you open Word you may have resources remaining "tied up" and unavailable and thus the resulting low resource message...

This can also happen if you've programs opening in your Start-up menu that are not necessary. These can chew up System Resources and most of these programs can be opened from the Start Programs menu.

Here's some information on how you can control your resources:

I would also suggest that you take a look at the System Restore setting in Me and reduce this to the bare minimum.

One other item would be to routinely run a program such as Spybot Search & Destory (primarily for its Registry Checking)...and, in conjunction with this I would run the Microsoft RegClean which is a free-ware program...

They appear to check for different Registry anomalies...

Windows Me can run well, it just needs to run "lean and mean!" ;)
